Christmas Morning

Christmas was toned down just a bit this year due to the wonderful real estate market, but the kids still did quite well nonetheless.

Ahh, stockings first. What? Coal? Dannnnng!
Duh-duh-duh-duh, duh-duh-duh. Both Kelton and Braden got Indiana Jones hats and whips (equipped with action sounds) from Santa. They were both stoked. Indiana Jones has been on the mind for these two for the last couple of months.
Ryker was just happy sitting in his new Bumbo chair playing with the crinkly paper. Braden got a "Bakugan" game and by midday he had lost 3 of the 6 player pieces. Sounds about right!Trying to get all three of the kids to look in the same direction is nearly impossible.

Christmas Eve With the Shaffer's

Christmas Eve tradition dictates that Gary stand next to the tree and hand out all the gifts. Christmas morning is usually fairly quiet for the Shaffer's these days as most of the gifts are opened on Christmas Eve.
After opening a few presents, Kelton is licking his chops for more, "What's next?"
We try to jam as many people as we can into the Shaffer's front living room and get the sound level up as high as we can. I can remember that I had to leave the room nine years ago on our first Christmas eve due how noisy it gets in there. It's nothing compared to family gatherings at my parents house.

Braden got a scale model of a T-Rex skeleton that he had to put together (actually dad ended up putting it together, and it wasn't easy!) and Kelton got a Clone Trooper helmet and dart gun.

Ryker decided that he'd had enough and decided to clock out for the remainder of the evening.

Kelton the Performer

Kelton had his Christmas Program today at pre-school. He sang some Christmas songs with all the actions and made sure we knew he was having a good time by giving us the double thumbs up. At the end of the program a special visitor arrived. As Kelton was sitting on Santa's lap he asked Kelton what he wanted for Christmas. Kelton replied, "a hammer." Of course a hammer to go along with the other two hammers he has.

Edward Arthur Sandgren Funeral

Edward Arthur Sandgren (Scott's Grandfather) passed away November 27, 2008 (Thanksgiving Day). The following is Grandpa's obituary:

"Edward Arthur Sandgren, 94, passed away on November 27, 2008 in Provo, UT, due to incidences of old age, surrounded by family members. He was born June 18, 1914 in Provo, UT to George Edward and Amy (Swenson) Sandgren.

Edward grew up on University Avenue in Provo with two siblings, Clyde and Laraine, and Buddy, his beloved German Sheppard. His good Swedish mother loved his voice and taught him to sing which became a lifelong pursuit. He attended Provo High School and participated in band and chorus and played basketball, tennis and was on the swim team and received a music scholarship to Brigham Young University. One day at BYU, he heard a young lady with an angelic voice singing in a practice room and, feigning no knowledge of music, introduced himself to Ruth Tillotson. The next day when Ruth attended the first day of chorus she discovered Edward was the assistant music director! When he asked her out on a date she was so angry at him for pretending not to know anything about music she turned him down. With perseverance, he finally got her to go on a date and the rest is history. Edward married his sweetheart, Ruth, on August 25, 1941 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple and they were blessed with five children who love and honor him.

With a degree in Music Education and a minor in Political Science, Edward and his new bride moved to New York City with the intent to follow in his brother's footsteps and go to law school at St. Johns University. Plans changed as the United States became more involved in World War II and Edward received pressure to obtain a civil service job to assist in the war effort. He and Ruth once again drove across the country to southern California to work at Lockheed and eventually Hill Air Force Base in Clearfield, UT doing airplane maintenance work.
Following the end of the war he took his first teaching job in Cedar City, UT at the College of Southern Utah. He eventually ended up teaching music at Ben Lomond High School in Ogden, UT and Orem High and Mountain View High Schools in Orem, UT.

Wherever Edward lived, he organized civic choirs, ward choirs, quartets and also did solo work. He was particularly proud of the Cedar City Lions Quartet he organized and directed, which traveled to Atlantic City to compete at the Lions International Convention Quartet Competition, where they took first place. He made lasting impressions in both Cedar City and Ogden, UT in founding The Master Singers and The Ogden Chorale.

Ultimately his greatest work and satisfaction was derived in teaching young people in the high schools to love and appreciate wonderful choral music. He is a beloved choir teacher. His choirs received invitations from Utah and national organizations to represent them from coast to coast and internationally. Many of his students fondly remember performing at the Kennedy Center for Performing Arts in Washington D.C. Edward received many honors and recognition, including: a Biennial Scholarship to the Berkshire Music Center at Tanglewood, MA; the BYU Emeritus Association Special Recognition Award; the Outstanding Educator Award as part of the America's Freedom Festival; and the Arthur V. Watkins Cultural Arts Award. Perhaps his greatest honor came at the frail age of 91 when he was invited to lead current and former choir students in singing his signature "Battle Hymn of the Republic" at Orem High School's 50th anniversary celebration.

Music was certainly Edward's love but he also enjoyed BYU sports and held football and basketball season tickets for many years. He rarely missed a televised football game including the last BYU-Utah game.

Edward was a High Priest in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and a most faithful Latter-day Saint. He dearly loved his family and provided a spiritual foundation for generations to come. He taught the gospel of Jesus Christ to thousands throughout his life through sacred music and example.

Of course he enjoyed visits from his family but nothing seemed to brighten his day or cheer him up more than a former student recognizing him or visiting him at his home.
Survivors include his wife Ruth of 67 years; five children, Rene (Edward) Graves; Arthur (Carol) Sandgren; Lucille (John) Blake; Charles (Mignon) Sandgren; David Sandgren; 28 grandchildren and 30+ great grandchildren. His brother, Clyde D. Sandgren and his sister, Laraine Sandgren, preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, December 5, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at the Oak Hills Ninth Ward Hillside Chapel, 1960 N. 1500 E.

Provo, UT. Friends, former students and family may call Thursday evening, December 4, 2008 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Sundberg-Olpin Mortuary, 495 South State Street, Orem, UT and Friday from to 9:30-10:30 a.m. at the church. Burial will be in the Pleasant Grove Cemetery."

Loooooong, but all true. Grandpa was a great man! We'll see you on the other side Gramps!

Dad gathered his brothers and brother in-law together (Chuck, Dave, Ed) and sang "God Be With You Til We Meet Again" at the gravesite. Grandpa, when able would also sing with them at all of the cousins mission farewells and homecomings. We'll miss his great voice!

Braden's School Program

Here is Braden posing on the stage after his 1st grade program. How about a little cheese with that bowtie? After the program Braden and his cousin Teagan (not a girlfriend) held hands as they walked to the car.

Master Yoda, Busy Bumblebee and Grandpa

I am finally getting around to posting our Halloween pictures. The kids had a great time trick or treating. They thought they hit the mother load with candy even though we were rained out.
Kelton at preschool. He does a great Yoda impression. "Master Yoda, I am".
Ryker--Just the cutest bee you have ever seen!
This year when I asked Braden what he wanted to be for Halloween he said, "Grandpa". Grandpa Shaffer is a Harley ridin' dude and was so proud that Braden wanted to be him for Halloween that he went out and bought the genuine Harley shirt and do-rag. I bought Braden a long black wig and studded bracelets, but he told me, "Grandpa doesn't have long hair or bracelets, but I will paint my hair gray." Gosh, mom doesn't know anything!

Silver Lake

Want to have some good Sunday family fun? Silver Lake is the place to go! It is located in Big Cottonwood Canyon right by Brighton ski resort. The boys had so much fun playing in the dirt, snow, water, and rocks. We walked around the lake and had little adventures along the way.
I love this picture! Bright-eyed and bushy tailed Ryker. He slept the whole time and woke up right when we got back to our car.

Braden took this picture. I thought it was pretty good for his first time photo!

Braden is pretending he is a chipmunk and Kelton just found the perfect Yoda stick.

Fall Fun

This fall the boys and I have really enjoyed this great weather. Here are some of the fun things we have done....

Last week I took the boys to Gardner Village. My friends and I go there every year to see the witches. This year everyone had the same idea (probably because the weather was so nice and it was UEA weekend). The crowd was so huge and we only saw our friends for a few minutes and ended up wandering around on our own. We had a great time nonetheless!

We all had fun going to the Thanksgiving Point Farm Country a couple weeks ago. Teagan, Braden and Kelton loved riding the ponies and feeding the sheep. Ryker slept in the stroller the whole time. Maybe next year he will be able to enjoy the festivities.
